A former Los Angeles District attorney, Neil Shouse, and former police officer, Michael Scafiddi, now both criminal defense attorneys in California, discuss California's switchblade laws. • https://www.shouselaw.com/ca/defense/... • Penal Code 21510 makes it a misdemeanor to carry, possess or sell a switchblade knife in the state of California. • Under Penal Code 17235, a switchblade is defined as a pocketknife with a blade 2 or more inches in length which can be automatically released by the flick of a button, pressure on the handle or a flip of the wrist. • A switchblade is sometimes referred to as an automatic knife, pushbutton knife, ejector knife, switch knife, Sprenger or Springer knife, or flick knife. • Spring-blade knives, snap-blade knives, gravity knives and similar knives are also illegal switchblades under Penal Code 17235 PC. • Other knives which fall within the definition of switchblade include balisong or batanga knives, also called butterfly or fan knives. These are folding pocket knives with two handles that counter-rotate around the tang. When closed, the blade is concealed within grooves in the handle.
