Sudden unexplained nocturnal death syndrome (SUNDS) is the term for a specific cardiac event that goes by many names. In the Philippines, it’s known as bangungot. It describes the sudden — and curious — death of healthy young people, often male, who die while they’re sleeping. Even more curious, postmortem routine autopsy cannot explain these deaths. The first description of SUNDS came in 1917 in the Philippines. It was later reported on in 1981 in the New York Times.
