Visual Learner Studios uses visual mnemonics to teach pharmacology fast and efficiently. • Website: http://VisualLearner.net/ • Facebook:   / visuallearnerstudios   • Twitter:   / vl_studios   • Antihistamines • Alright today we will quickly go over a couple examples of Antihistamines which are used in treating allergy and hay fever. In this picture a hissing snake has escaped and has turned up by the pool. The fox bravely takes out his fencing sword and fights off this slithering intruder. • Ok! The first thing we want you to notice is the HISSING snake. This is to remind you that this picture is of Anti-HISSS-tamines! • Antihistamines • Antihistamines are split into first and second generations. • First Generation: Chlorphenamine, Diphenhydramine, Cyclizine • The first generation antihistamines are represented by the two characters who get to swim in the pool FIRST. The “DIVING HYDRA” is DI-PHEN-HYDRA-mine. The “COLOURFUL ANEMONE” is CHLOR-PHEN-AMINE, and the “CYCLE MAGAZINE” is CYCL-i-ZINE. • Second Generation: Cetirizine, Loratadine, Fexofenadine • The second generation antihistamines are the two characters at the top who get to swim in the pool SECOND and unfortunately have to face the snake. The “CITRUS MAGAZINE” is CET-iri-ZINE, the “FOX FENCING” is FEX-o-FEN-adine, and his “LOW JEANS” is LO-ratad-INE. • To learn more about visual mnemonics and antihistamines, including mechanisms of action and side effects, please check out our website at VisualLearner.net.
