In 1962, the U.S. Army adopted a rifle designated as XM16E1 as an experimental rifle during the Vietnam War. Not long after, some changes were made and it was officially adopted. The adopted model would be known as the M16A1 and it would serve with U.S. Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen up until around the 1980’s.
