FeO starts as ONE iron atom, with two valence electrons, and ONE oxygen atom, with six valence electrons. The metal, iron, gives its two electrons to oxygen, and has zero left in that outer shell. The oxygen, having gained two electrons, now has a complete octet. Iron (II) oxide is an IONIC compound made from these Fe(+2) and O(-2) ions. • Check me out: http://www.chemistnate.com
