What is pollination? • Answer: • Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from anther to the stigma of either same flower or another flower with the help of different pollinating agencies. • 2. Differentiate between self and cross pollination. • Self pollination is the type of pollination in which bisexual flower is pollinated by its own pollen grains. • Cross pollination is type of pollination in which pollengrains of the flower are deposited on the stigma of the flower of a different plant of same species. • 3. Give reason as to why do maize as well as saliva plants show cross pollination? • Maize bears unisexual flowers in a seperate infloresence on the same plant hence they are cross pollinated. • Saliva is dichogamous protandrous with anthers maturing before stigma thus they show cross pollination. • 4. Explain the term. • Autogamy: autogamy is self pollination in which a bisexual flower is pollinated by its pollen grains. • Allogamy: allogamy is cross pollination in which the stigma is pollinated by pollen grains of another plant. • Geitenogamy: Tenu Gami is the transfer of pollen grains to the stigma of another flower produced on the same plant. • 5. 'Pollination is the pre-requisite of fertilization in flowering plants' explain /comment. • Answer: • in angiosperms both the male and female gametes are non motile. Thus fertilization is possible only after pollination.
