For many in higher education, coffee is a vital fuel for learning and creativity. How a campus relates to coffee can reveal a lot about where the campus really stands in relation to social justice and sustainability. Geographer and Coffee Maven James Hayes-Bohanan describes a future in which Bridgewater State University lives its values with campus cafes that are national models for the just treatment of producers and healthy relationships with the Earth. • James Hayes-Bohanan has been part of the Bridgewater State community since 1997, when he was hired to teach courses in environmental geography and the geography of Latin America. These interests began almost immediately to converge around a growing interest in the many geographies of coffee as an environmental , economic, social, culinary, and artistic subject. • Through the generosity of coffee farmers and others in the industry, he continues to learn about the many ways in which we are connected to coffee - even if we do not drink it. • Known as the Coffee Maven, he has come to view our relationship to coffee as a strong indicator of our relationships with the wider world. • This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
