By now you're likely tired of people browbeating you with the inescapable fact that winter tires are safer and better than all-season tires in nasty winter weather. But there's a new contender on the scene lately and it's the all-weather tire. Designed as the middle ground between an all-season tire (which is truly a three-season tire in Canada) and a dedicated winter tire, the all-weather tire was put to the test to see if it was up to the task. The folks at Kal Tire set up a snowy test course and despite this test being in late January with significant snowfalls in Toronto before and after the shoot, the parking lot was devoid of snow so some had to be trucked in to make up the testing circuit. • The all-weather tire is made from a softer compound than an all-season, has deeper siping and a more aggressive tread shoulder. We put the tire through three different tests: a straight-line braking test; a circular skidpad; and a slalom course.
