The TAEC research team first met Hmong musician, Mr. Tongthor Vatou (or Tong), after he performed for a large audience during the Hmong New Year festival in Luang Prabang. The team was there documenting music and wind instruments for TAEC's newest special exhibition, Voices of the Wind: Traditional Instruments in Laos . • Tong is originally from Xieng Khouang Province and came to Luang Prabang a few years ago to study English at the local university. Feeling nostalgic and missing his family and community, Tong decided to learn how to play the raj nplaim (pronounced tja plai) with a friend from the university. The raj nplaim is a very popular Hmong instrument and it can be used to communicate by mimicking spoken language - watch here • Hmong Raj Nplaim - The Voice of a W... . You can see that Tong has personalised his instrument with stickers between the fingers holes, and a plastic bottle working as an amplifier for a more robust sound! • Explore more music and musical instruments in Laos on our website - https://www.taeclaos.org/music-resources. • Connect with TAEC! • Web: http://taeclaos.org • Facebook: / taeclaos • Instagram: / taeclaos • SoundCloud: / taeclaos
