_IN PROCESS • EP. 12 | ODD FUTURE • Formed 2007, ODD FUTURE is a group of Los Angeles homies, classmates, and myspace friends that got together to pull pranks, nerd out on streetwear, and lace tracks. In this episode of _IN PROCESS, we’re taking a look at ODD FUTURE. During the early days, they worked together to release promote The Odd Future Mixtape. New members would join as Tyler dropped his solo debut, Bastard. Earl offered up his self-titled mixtape, and the buzz around them would accelerate. The group would often be found in the Hypebeast forums, solidifying their attachment to cool, underground subcultures. ODD FUTURE would then release RADICAL, Tyler would sign a record deal in 2010, and the group began to stockpile ammunition for their upcoming assault on the entertainment world. • In February 2011, Tyler unloaded. • When Yonkers dropped, hip-hop was hit with a magnitude 9 earthquake. Promoted on all the hot blogs and shared by millions, Tyler went viral. He was at the front of a very different movement, and he was bringing ODD FUTURE with him. Over the course of the next few years, the direction of pop culture completely shifted based on the moves these kids made. • They fired out Tyler’s GOBLIN, MellowHype’s BlackendWhite, Frank Ocean’s NostalgiaULTRA, founded ODD FUTURE records, directed mountain dew commercials, hit the magazine covers, got animated on Regular Show. ODD FUTURE dropped a clothing line, a 2nd mixtape, and worked with Jackass’s Jeff Tremaine to develop a SKIT COMEDY SHOW named Loiter Squad. • The 4 years following Yonkers was beyond prolific for any collective. LOITER SQUAD took ODD FUTURE’S antics outside of music, and expanded their appeal. GOLF WANG opened up new doors in fashion exploration. The establishment of the Camp Flog Gnaw carnival flipped the entire script on what a group’s live performance could be. Multiple members entered Grammy territory. The sights, sounds, and sheer excitement of ODD FUTURE’S output was a sight to behold. • This wave of success seemed designed to last decades. But at the peak of their popularity, ODD FUTURE unofficially disbanded around 2015, due to internal disagreements. Though there was a brief reunion performance in 2018, here’s been no official word of any new work as a collective as of today. • • OF’s gestation period began during a low time in Hip Hop. Mainstream Hip-Hop was primarily club tracks, diss tracks, or tracks against both. The landscape was begging for something original. This musical geography made ODD FUTURE easily one of the most original groups to ever hit the scene. Not just in regards to Hip Hop; but to the history of contemporary music. • Despite their current questionable status, ODD FUTURE remains heavily influential of pop culture today. The ragtag group of friends had all the makings of stardom. These young, startup musicians were talented from the beginning; unafraid to be themselves. ODD FUTURE was kids just trying to have fun, push the envelope, and avoid normal life at all cost. • ODD FUTURE is a generation-defining event that cannot be replicated. As a creative, the best you can hope for is to utilize the gifts that they’ve laid out along the way. Get wild, get heard, and go change the future. • That’s what it means to Push Product. • --- • push-product.com • Instagram @pushproduct • Patreon: • https://www.patreon.com/user?u=16239876
