La magnifica cappella Brancacci, voluta nel 1424 dalla ricca famiglia fiorentina di mercanti di seta, che si trova nella chiesa del Carmine è uno dei massimi esempi di pittura rinascimentale, frutto della collaborazione tra due dei maggiori artisti dell'epoca: Masaccio e Masolino che l'hanno affrescata con episodi della storia di San Pietro (che era il santo protettore dei Brancacci) e con le famose scene della tentazione di Adamo ed Eva (di Masolino) e la loro cacciata dal Paradiso terrestre (di Masaccio). Gli affreschi della cappella furono poi terminati circa 50 anni dopo, da Filippino Lippi. La pala d'altare con la Madonna col Bambino risale al 1268, anno di fondazione della chiesa del Carmine. Da ricordare anche L'ultima cena dell'Allori (1582) nel cenacolo del monastero. CURIOSITÀ: nell'affresco di fondo al centro sulla parete sinistra ci sono l'autoritratto di Masaccio (che ci osserva) e accanto a lui il volto di Brunelleschi (col cappuccio), quello di Masolino (sullo sfondo) e di Leon Battista Alberti (di profilo); mentre sulla parete di destra c'è l'autoritratto di Filippino Lippi, in piedi che ci guarda, nella scena della crocifissione di San Pietro • . • The magnificent Brancacci chapel, commissioned in 1424 by the rich Florentine family of silk merchants, located in the Carmine church is one of the greatest examples of Renaissance painting, the result of the collaboration between two of the greatest artists of the time: Masaccio and Masolino who 'they frescoed with episodes from the story of St. Peter (who was the patron saint of the Brancaccis) and with the famous scenes of the temptation of Adam and Eve (by Masolino) and their expulsion from Paradise (by Masaccio). The frescoes in the chapel were then finished about 50 years later, by Filippino Lippi. The altarpiece with the Madonna and Child dates back to 1268, the year the Carmine church was founded.
