Denis Lehmann (XIMEA GmbH) introduces X-Ray Imaging. A photon with enough energy to have a wavelength of just 10nm to 0.01nm is generally considered to be an x-ray, quantified by their energy in electron volts. Based on their wavelength different uses of applications in science or industry are possible. Two basic ways of detecting their presence: Direct detection is basically the same method used by a standard digital camera through the photoelectric effect on the silicon of the sensor. Indirect detection is when the x-ray interacts with some other material that then generates a detectable signal by a device. • The photoelectric effect is responsible for the creation of electric signals in digital cameras and creates ‘photoelectrons’ in the individual pixels that can be counted by the electronics in the sensor and camera and then digitized into a digital number that can be displayed as an image by a computer. Visible light generates one of these photoelectrons per photon hitting a pixel. An x-ray photon on the other hand has much more energy per photon and liberates many more photoelectrons depending on the energy of the x-ray.
