This is a Deeparadhana sloka or Deepa Vandana. It is recited while lighting a lamp or diya in the evening. The light emanating from the ghee lamp removes darkness, ignorance and evil. The light is therefore worshipped as God. This sloka means: I pray to the evening lamp whose light is Supreme knowledge and removes the darkness of ignorance.
