An in depth review of using the ReTyre Ice Racer Skin in the Jura Mountains. An ingenious system consisting of a base tire onto which you can zip different tire skins . • Une revue approfondie de l'utilisation du pneu ReTyre Ice Racer dans les montagnes du Jura. Un système ingénieux consistant en un pneu de base sur lequel vous pouvez zipper différentes peaux de pneu. • 00:00 Introduction • 06:55 Ride Montage • 09:18 Likes • 12:07 Dislikes • 14:33 Conclusion • UPDATE - After publishing my video ReTyre got in touch to provide some extra information about some of the points I raised. Sharing these below FYI: • 1) Tyre/skin wiggling - reTyre One base tyre is supposed to be inflated for 24 hours before mounting on the Skin. That is why, upon mounting, there was a bit of space between the 2 layers, in regular use that doesn't actually happen. That is also why, while riding, you experienced it got better and not so noticeable. During regular use, you would actually often experience that two layers forming a vacuum, with no air between, especially noticeable when detaching the skins. ** Note from Swiss Family - I can attest to this that the skin did have significantly less wiggle after a few more rides. ** • 2) Weight - When you have both base tyres and winter Skins with studs, there will be only about 3-500g more than a conventional studded tyre. But as you know, our primary target and users are daily commuters and they are willing to trade these drawbacks for the convenience of being able to attach or remove Skins in less than a minute. • 3) Gap - while zipping the skin, you should zip in smaller sections, pulling the zipper in smaller length and interchanging the sides, but also always slightly pulling the Skin towards you. That assures the minimal gap, which is not noticeable while riding. However, you noticed that gap doesn't actually create an issue, even with the non-optimal mounting conditions. Also, if the One base tyre had time to expand, you would experience a much nicer fit and no space for any stones or debris to roll in. • 4) And last, we would like to state that our system is intended for city commuters, seasonal cyclists, people living in locations with varying weather conditions, all the regular folks who find the tyre change a hassle and usually cycle on tyres they got with their bike, no matter the road/weather conditions. Also, it is perfect for e-bikes, most of our customers are e-bike commuters. For them, it offers flexibility, more safety and stability and offers a possibility to enjoy their bike even more, to prolong the riding season, to start winter cycling, to try some bikepacking adventures. We've never intended to replace the high-performance, specialized tires, there are enough brands in that segment already ;) Our customers find drawbacks of the system minor, irrelevant to the advantages it offers.
