Say you've got multiple VLANs behind one physical ASA and the departments that operate those VLANs want to configure their own firewall policies. With a virtual ASA, you can make sure they don't cause harm to one another's networks. • Running multiple VLANs behind a single physical ASA works well up until the point that users of each VLAN want to make their own changes to access lists, modular policy framework and NAT. • To give each VLAN control of its firewall settings but still keep them on the same physical ASA, you'll need to create a virtual firewall. These work in much the same way as a virtualized PC: the physical ASA boots from a configuration file that instructs it to spin up contexts — or virtual instances of a firewall. • Those contexts boot from their own files, and those files can be configured from the command line, ASDM or a combination of both.
