His family journeyed to distant farms just to attend Mass. Young Vianney admired the courage of the priests and began to look up to them as heroes. • John attended the school with the intention of becoming a priest but the French Revolution interrupted Vianney’s education. He struggled in his studies, especially Latin. But his deep determination to become a priest let him prevail over his difficulties. Vianney was ordained a priest in 1815. • In 1818 Vianney was appointed parish priest of Ars, which he strived to transform spiritually and made a model parish. He was known for his devotion to the Virgin Mary and he encouraged people to pray the rosary. • Vianney came to be known internationally, and there were many pilgrims who came to consult him. By 1855, about 20,000 people visited him, seeking his advice. He could read people’s hearts. Even before the people could tell him, he already knew what they had been through. It is said that even the staunchest of sinners were converted at his mere word. He dedicated most of his time to the sacrament of confession for his parishioners. During the last ten years of his life, he spent 16 to 18 hours a day in the confessional. There are many stories of miracles wrought through St John Vianney including healing of many children. • On 4 August 1859, Vianney died at the age of 73. More than 6,000 people and 300 priests attended the funeral. • In 1925 John Vianney was canonized by Pope Pius XI who in 1929 made him patron saint of diocesan priests.
