Situated less than an hour by bus from Girona lies the spectacular medieval town of Besalú in Catalonia. The bridge is the iconic view of this town. You can wander around the cobbled streets, eat paella in the town square, relax by the river, visit the miniatures museum, visit one of the medieval churches or go for a hike in the surrounding hills, as I did. • The following day, I visited a village built on a cliff! Castellfollit de la Roca dates back to medieval times and the village is famous for its houses built on volcanic rock formed from lava flow around 200,000 years ago. • Situated in the La Garrotxa Natural Volcanic Park, it's a little off the beaten track and therefore doesn't get overrun with visitors.
