He was the oldest member of the Senate. • In Jewish circles, he was highly regarded for getting the Lautenberg Amendment enacted as part of the 1990 Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill. It facilitated the emigration of Soviet Jews by relaxing standards for refugee status and granting immigrant status to those who could show religious persecution in their native lands.
