Dr Brady Cox demos a LargeScale Mobile Shaker used for Earthquake Simulation

The University of Texas Cockrell School of Engineering has three large-scale mobile shakers, affectionately known as T-Rex , Thumper , and Liquidator . These were funded by the NSF Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES). • These shakers are used to simulate earthquakes from low-levels of shaking to high-levels of shaking. The large baseplate in the center of the truck rests on the ground and applies tens of thousands of pounds of force. The baseplate then vibrates vertically or horizontally to create various types of vibrations and stress waves that propagate through the soil. • Brady Cox, assistant professor at the Cockrell School of Engineering, gives a brief tour of Liquidator prior to returning to Christchurch, New Zealand, where he will continue his research using T-Rex . • Learn more about the UT Austin Christchurch project here: • http://www.engr.utexas.edu/features/7...
