As you likely know, a lot of cryptozoologists think Nessie could be a plesiosaur that somehow survived to the present. But there was some concern about her since she hadn’t been spotted since August of 2016. In fact, she had been declared ‘missing’ by the official sightings record keeper … worries grew that Nessie may have died. But she did finally reappear in 2017, after an absence of around 9 months. So you obviously cannot keep a good cryptid down … but what do you think Nessie was up to during her time off? • • Mapinguari (mah-ping-gwar-EE) • This cryptid has red fur and is said to be an apelike creature living in the Amazon rainforests of Bolivia and Brazil. It stands up to 9 feet tall, stands on two legs and has long claws, alligator-type skin that’s bulletproof … and has only one eye. Some stories even claim the creature has an additional mouth in the center of its stomach that emits a foul stench to ward off hunters. A few explanations for the critter have developed. The most popular being that this is either some type of giant anteater … or a giant ground sloth, similar to Megatherium, one of the largest land mammals of all time. Widespread sightings of the creature have been reported throughout the region, with more than 100 eyewitness accounts of the creature collected in 1994. More sightings were reported in 2007, with descriptions remaining relatively consistent. • Honorable Mention • Poseidon Rex • And before getting to our number one prehistoric cryptid, we’ll take a moment for this Honorable Mention. This picture really caught our attention while researching the episode …we figured it wasn’t taken during an event that happened in real life, although that would have been awesome. Nor did it turn out to be a warning against drinking on the high seas. It’s actually a still from a movie called “Poseidon Rex”, which tells the story of this massive critter that was rudely awakened by some fortune hunters after hibernating for 60,000 years. You’d probably wake up cranky, too. What kind of dinosaur did they base Poseidon Rex on? • • mela-ntouka (eh-mellon-TOO-kuh) • Here’s a cryptid you couldn’t miss if you tried. It’s said to be around the size of an African Bush Elephant, or stand over 10 feet tall and weigh over 13,000 pounds. It’s said they resemble a rhino, with one big horn on its snout, and moves its massive body around on stump-like legs. Like Ngoubou (nuh-gow-boo), this creature seems to have features consistent with ceratopsians (sara-top-see-uns) like Triceratops. But some cryptozoologists think the creature is more like an aquatic rhinoceros. Whatever it is, the animal is described as ferocious, and will kill anything in its path … especially elephants. In fact, it’s name means “elephant killer”. It allegedly makes its home in remote areas of the Congo and Cameroon.
