The sacrifice of the 110th Regiment and the Combat Command Reserve from the 9th Armoured Division, which fought fiercely on the roads to Bastogne, slowing the German panzer columns, enabled the arrival of American reinforcements in Bastogne. By December 19th, the 101st Airborne Division and elements of the 10th Armoured Division had arrived. Armour immediately went to nearby villages to stop the German advance while the paratroopers formed an all-around perimeter around Bastogne.
