Speaking with publisher Chiki Sarkar at JLF Brave New World, celebrated author Jhumpa Lahiri recalled her memory of moving to Rome in 2012 and how the three years that followed proved to be the turning point in her life. Counting the surprising things that happened, she noted that it was the most fascinating when she shifted to writing in Italian in her diaries. • Talking about the value of diary-writing, Lahiri claimed that reading the diaries of other writers was an enormous source of illumination for her as an emerging writer. Giving the example of the novel Dracula, she talked about how the diary mode was used to execute the tale narratively. • “I would read the diaries of other writers to understand what it meant to be a writer,” said Lahiri and further added that she has kept a diary for decades now. Though she does not make an entry every day, it continues to have a prominent place in her life - there are piles of notebooks that constantly surround her, possessing the records of her times, her impressions and her life. Lahiri told Sarkar that the diary followed her from New York to the Queen Mary across the Atlantic - the same notebook that begins in English suddenly shifts to Italian a week after arriving in Rome. • Watch the Full Video:    • The Boundary: Jhumpa Lahiri in conver...   • Follow us on Social Media – •   / jlflitfest   •   / jlflitfest   •   / jlflitfest   •    / jlflitfest   • #Jhumpa_Lahiri • #JhumpaLahiri • #Jhumpa_auther • #Lahiri
