Definiteness (مَعْرَفَة - تَنْكِيْر) • 2. Gender - الْجِنْس • 3. Number - الْعَدَد • 4. Case - 'Iraab - الْإِعْرَاب • Understanding the four properties is essential for understanding Arabic. Without getting a mastery of these we will not able to understand, use, or translate any Arabic sentences or phrases. • In this lesson [#01-P2] we give an overview of the four properties with a detailed introduction to I'raab - إِعْرَاب. • (1) Definiteness (مَعْرَفَة - تَنْكِيْر) • Just like an English noun - An اسْم will be either • (i) definite (مَعْرِفَة) - الْمُسْلِمُ (The Muslim) or • (ii) indefinite (نَكِيْرَة) - مُسْلِمٌ (a Muslim) • • (2) Gender - الْجِنْس • In English an اسْم, we have a natural gender - but in Arabic there is NO neutral gender, an اسْم has to be treated either as • (i) Masculine - مُذّكَّر e.g. مُسْلِمٌ (a male Muslim) or • (ii) Feminine - مُؤَنَّث e.g. مُسْلِمَةٌ (a female Muslim) • (3) Number - الْعَدَد • In English nouns are either singular or plural (2 or more), in Arabic an اسْم can be • (i) Singular - مُفْرَدٌ e.g. مُسْلِمٌ (a Muslim) • (ii) Dual - مُثَنَّى - e.g. مُسْلِمَانِ (Two Muslims) • (iii) Plural - جَمْع - e.g. مُسْلِمِيْنَ (Muslims) • What is I'raab إِعْرَابٌ ? • This property is unfamiliar to English speaking students. As there is no direct equivalent in English. • The إِعْرَابٌ (status/case) of an اسْم can be in of 3 cases • (i) Rafa - رَفْع e.g. مُسْلِمٌ (a Muslim) • (ii) Nasab - نَصْب - e.g.مُسْلِمًا (a Muslim) • (iii) Jarr - جَرّ- e.g. مُسْلِمٍ (a Muslim) • Key topics covered in this course are: • Arabic Grammar, Quranic Arabic, Easy Arabic • Course focused on learning Arabic to Understand Qur'an • Arabic Grammar for English speakers • how to learn Arabic for English speakers • Learning Arabic for beginners • Lisan ul Qur'an course English • Easy way to learn Arabic grammar in English • Learn Arabic at home
