Cannaceae Canna family • Distribution: 1 genus, 10 species, mainly tropical and subtropical America, several species having naturalized in Asia and Africa. • Salient features: Herbaceous perennials, leaves broad, sheathing at base, flowers showy, bisexual, trimerous, perianth petaloid, stamens petaloid, only one fertile, ovary inferior, style flat with marginal stigma, fruit covered with warts. • Habit: Perennial herbs with an underground rhizome. • Stem: Rhizome or rarely tuberous, and underground. the aerial stem is also found. Distinct mucilage canals are present. • Leaves: large, cauline, foliaceous, alternate, broad, with distinct midrib containing air canals, simple, venation parallel, petiole sheathing the stem, stipules absent. • Inflorescence: raceme, panicle, or spike • Flowers: Large, bracteate, shortly pedicellated, showy, trimerous, bisexual, zygomorphic, epigynous • Perianth: Six in two whorls of 3 each differentiated into calyx and corolla. Sepal three: polysepalous, persistent imbricate; petals 3, larger, connate at the base; petaloid, imbricate. • Androecium: 6 stamens, in 2 whorls, sometimes reduced to 4; connate and adnate to petals, three outers modified into petaloid staminodes, imbricate. Out of 3 inner stamens, 2 are modified into petaloid staminodes and the third with half anther lobe fertile and other modified into petaloid staminodes. • Gynoecium: Tricarpellary, syncarpous, warty, inferior, trilocular with many ovules, placentation axile, style flattened and petaloid; stigma one and represented by the stigmatic line on the apical margin • Fruit: a capsule covered with warts, Loculicidal warty crowned by persistent calyx. • Find my Educational videos at the following link: • Plant Taxonomy: Family Orchidaceae: • • Family- Orchidaceae • Plant taxonomy: Family Labiatae (Lamiaceae): • • Labiatae (Lamiaceae) • Plant anatomy: Simple permanent tissue - Parenchyma tissue • • Simple permanent tissue Parenchyma • Plant anatomy: Plant Tissue system -Meristem tissue • • Plant Tissue Types- Meristematic tissue • Plant Taxonomy: Family Apocynaceae: • • Apocynaceae family • Plant Taxonomy: Family Capparidaceae: • • Capparidaceae • Plant taxonomy: Family Magnoliaceae • • Family Magnoliaceae • Plant Taxonomy: Family Asteraceae • • Family Asteraceae (Compositae • Plant Taxonomy: Family Mimosaceae • • Mimosaceae • Plant taxonomy: Family Papilionaceae • • Family - Papilionaceae • Plant Cell Biology: Chromosome • • Chromosome • Plant Cell Biology: Nucleus • • Nucleus • Plant Cell Biology: Microbodies: Peroxisome and Glyoxysome • • Microbodies (Peroxisomes and Glyoxiso... • Plant Cell Biology: Chloroplast • • Chloroplast • Plant Cell Biology: Ribosome • • Ribosomes • Plant Cell Biology: Mitochondria • • Mitochondria • Plant Cell Biology: Lysosome • • Lysosomes • Plant Cell Biology: Golgi complex • • Golgi Complex • Plant Cell Biology: Endoplasmic Reticulum • • Endoplasmic Reticulum • Plant Cell Biology: Cell Membrane • • Cell Membrane • Plant Cell Biology: Cytoplasm • • Cytoplasm • Plant Cell Biology: Cell Wall • • Cell Wall • Plant Cell Biology: Cytology - Pro and eukaryotic cells • • Cytology: Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic ... • Photosynthesis: Dark Reaction • • Dark Reaction of Photosynthesis / Cal... • Photosynthesis: Cyclic and noncyclic Photophosphorylation • • Photophosphorylation (Cyclic and Non ... • Plant anatomy: The internal structure of the Dicot stem • • Internal Structure of Dicotyledonous ... • Photosynthesis: Hill Reaction • • Hill Reaction (Primary Photochemical ... • Photosynthesis: Red drop, Emerson effect, Two pigment system • • Red Drop, Emerson effect and Two Pigm... • Photosynthesis: Role pigment in Photosynthesis • • Role of Pigment in Photosynthesis • Photosynthesis: Photosynthetic Pigment • • Photosynthetic pigment • Photosynthesis: Concept and apparatus of Photosynthesis • • Photosynthesis Concept and Chloroplas...
