SidebySide Comparison of Erosion Control Product Effectiveness

Hydraulically applied mulch is an effective way to prevent erosion and provide sustainable vegetation. When selecting the right erosion control product for your site, choosing a product with the proper erosion control effectiveness is paramount to your success. In this side-by-side comparison, EarthGuard® Fiber Matrix Pre-Packaged*, EarthGuard® Fiber Matrix Liquid, ProMatrix™ Engineered Fiber Matrix™† and Flexterra® High Performance-Flexible Growth Medium®‡ were tested at the independent Utah Water Research Laboratory at Utah State University, one of the world’s highest kinetic energy rainfall simulators used to evaluate soil erosion on slopes. • Each product was applied at the published manufacturer rates and tested on a 2.5H:1V slope with sandy loam soil. The lab simulated 5 inches (127 mm) of rainfall per hour for 60 minutes. • The products performed as follows, from most to least soil loss: • • EarthGuard® Fiber Matrix Pre-Packaged had an erosion control effectiveness of 70%, representing a soil loss of 56,025 lb/ac (62,748 kg/ha). This product performed at the level of a Stabilized Mulch Matrix. • • EarthGuard® Fiber Matrix Liquid had an erosion control effectiveness of 86%, representing a soil loss of 26,893 lb/ac (30,120 kg/ha). This product performed at the level of a Stabilized Mulch Matrix. • • ProMatrix™ EFM™ had an erosion control effectiveness of 96%, representing a soil loss of 7,428 lb/ac (8,320 kg/ha). This product performed at the level of a Bonded Fiber Matrix — one level higher than a Stabilized Mulch Matrix.
