The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892). It was much admired in its time, and very early on began to inspire paintings by the Pre-Raphaelite artists and photographers of Victorian England, including William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Julia Margaret Cameron. The painter John William Waterhouse carried the tradition over towards the close of the Victorian era and his painting of the lady seated in her boat became an iconic image of the 1960's and 70's. The subject of the mysterious lady in the tower has remained of interest today among those associated with Gothic revivalism and mystical questing and with all those passionate about great poetry and ideas. • Accompanied by lots of beautiful artwork, this is a reading of the popular revised version of 1842.
