Aspergillus is a fungus that is found in the soil, mouldy peanuts, maize, cotton seeds etc. Exposure to the spores can cause an allergic reaction called bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. Aspergillus may grow as a ball of fungus in cavities such as old TB cavities. This can present as haempotysis. Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis occurs in imunocompromised patients especially those who are neutropoenic and on corticosteroids. • #aspergillus #pathologylecture #pathologytutorial #aspergillosis • 0:00 Intro • 0:10 Origin of the name aspergillus • 0:48 Images of aspergillum and aspergillus fruiting body • 1:00 Species of aspergillus and where they are found such as soil • 1:35 How aspergillus gains entry to body and problems it can cause • 2:06 Aflatoxins produced by aspergillus flavus and parasiticus and hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) • 3:10 Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) causing asthma • 3:37 Photograph of sign for the old Home Brewery on the Sainsbury's site in Daybrook, Nottingham UK • 3:48 Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) where aspergillus occupies cavities in lungs as brown balls of fungus and occasionally forms nodules • 4.24 Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) in neutropenic and immunocompromised patients and those receiving corticosteroids where hyphae of aspergillus invade the tissues. • 5:17 Gross image of aspergillus nodules on pleura • 5:25 Microscopic images of aspergilloma • 5:58 Invasive aspergillosis images in lung • 6:03 Invasive aspergillosis images in brain stained with Grocott • 6:24 Aspergillus hyphae • 6:34 Aspergillus fruiting body producing spores
