Duo for Shakuhachi “TONE no FUNAUTA [The Boat Song of Tone River]” • Composer: FUKUDA, Rando • 1st shakuhachi: TANIGUCHI, Yoshinobu, • 2nd shakuhachi: YOKOYAMA, Katsuya • The Boat Song of Tone River was composed around 1926 by Rando Fukuda. • It is a piece which surrounds the listener with pleasant undulation • like a boat gently navigating a river and sounds conveying nature. • The piece starts in a relaxed tempo as if being lured by the relaxed • undulation a river generates in gentle weather, and after the tempo • quickens just as river currents change, the piece returns to a relaxed • tempo at the end like a boat gently navigating on water. • The two shakuhachis intertwine in a complex and pleasant manner just • like overlapping river currents and undulations of the boat. • The way the two shakuhachis intertwine complexly can be perceived as • how the river water flows in overlapping layers. Or, they may • represent the river and the boat. • The gentle melody of the Boat Song of Tone River invoking nature makes • this a piece which conveys the beauty of the sound of shakuhachi. • ※ • This performance of the Boat Song of Tone River is from 1982, when • Master Katsuya Yokoyama visited Master Yoshinobu Taniguchi’s Mineyama • Dojo. • ※ • The photos at the end of the video were taken when Master Ranpo • Yokoyama, Master Katsuya Yokoyama's father, went on a trip together • with Master Yoshinobu Taniguchi.
