Ocean waves in deep waters don't move horizontally in a single-minded manner, like the surf rolling onto the beach. Rather the motion is up and down and also horizontal. Focus on one of the dots to see how the up and down motion combines with the horizontal to create a spiraling motion. • This is primarily a transverse wave (a wave that oscillates perpendicularly to its line of travel).
