Join our pharmacist, Jay Gill and Dr. Ian Harrison from Harrison Equine in Berryville, VA. as they discuss Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis or EPM. EPM is a debilitating disorder in horses that occurs when they ingest parasites in their water or feed that has been contaminated with infected feces of opossums, skunks and even cats. The parasites travel from the stomach to the brain and spinal cord to cause damage. Learn about the symptoms you might see if your horse has EPM, the testing to diagnose the disease, and its treatments. Dr. Harrison encourages horse owners to contact their veterinarian if they notice any changes in their horse's behavior. Treatment is focused on killing the parasite using antiprotozoal medications like Diclazuril, Ponazuril, Toltrazuril/DMSO, and Sulfadiazine/Pyrimethamine. Dr. Harrison also recommends certain vitamin supplements to boost your horse's immune system and a regimented feeding routine. • Dr. Harrison has recently started teaching at Shenandoah University for their pre-veterinary program. His equine practice focuses on helping his clients with affordable equine care. You can find more information here. https://harrisonequine.com/
