This usage has to be among my favourites: how it’s travelled generation to generation in our colloquial Hindi culture! English does have a phrase for it. While the Hindi phrase is suited exclusively to surprise and disappointment, the English equivalent is, however, more versatile and is suited to both positive and negative situations. The good thing is that the English phrase has the same impact as the one in Hindi. Of course, literal translation barely helps, so it is only natural that the English phrase is a far cry from the Hindi one. That’s the beauty of language! People come from entirely different cultures, bearing different beliefs; however, we all ‘feel’ the same, ‘think’ the same, which is why, as a language trainer, I try to bring equivalent English expressions, phrasal verbs, and idioms so that the precise feeling in our beloved mother tongue ‘Hindi’ may be captured! Hope you end joy this little edition of my English class.
