Finally got to observe and photograph these beautiful LEUCISTIC ACORN WOODPECKERS. There are two of them at Bishop Ranch, San Ramon, California, USA [3/9] • Leucism in birds is defined as the complete or partial absence of eumelanin and pheomelanin in one or more feathers, but not in the eyes, bill or feet, resulting in white patches in all or part of the plumage. Acorn Woodpeckers have a distinctive red crown, glossy black and white head, white eyes, and white rump and wing patches. • Leucism and albinism are often difficult to tell apart in animals since the conditions share some of the same characteristics. While albinism refers to the complete lack of melanin—the natural pigment that gives skin, feathers, hair, and eyes their color—leucism involves a partial loss of pigmentation. Typically, leucism affects only dark feathers, so some birds with leucism have white feathers while still maintaining the bright colors of their red, orange, or yellow feathers. A bird is a true albino if its feet, legs, bill, and eyes are pale pink or red. • These two are just so beautiful busy doing what Acorn Woodpeckers do! • #FascinatingWorld #NatureTherapy #NatureLover #NaturePhotography #Wildlife #WildlifePhotography #Birds #Birding #BirdPhotography #BirdsOfInstagram #BirdsOfTheWorld #Nikon #NikonP950 #NikonPhotography @nikonusa @nikonoutdoorsusa #WatchLearnPhotograph #ColorsInNature #ProtectNature #Grateful #California #CaliforniaBirds #BirdsOfNorthAmerica #Woodpeckers #WoodpeckersOfTheWorld #Leucistic #Leucism
