Join Dr. Peter Carter, Paul Beckwith and Regina Valdez as they discuss SB-56, the Bonn UN Intersessional Climate Conference that took place from June 6th to June 16th in Bonn, Germany. Both Peter and Paul had NGO Observer badges and chose to attend virtually and in this video they share their observations and opinions. • This video was recorded on June 15th, 2022, and published on August 30th, 2022, and represents the opinions of the discussion participants. • Some of the topics discussed: • How the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, UNFCCC, has a negotiations structure which includes Subsidiary Bodies, which are committees that assist the Conference Of the Parties, COP. • These Subsidiary Bodies convene two times a year. Once at the annual COP conference and once at a separate conference hosted in Bonn, Germany. SB-56 was the 56th session of the Subsidiary Bodies hosted in Bonn, Germany. • How the denial of the gravity of the Climate Emergency is pervasive and universal as the committees continue to discuss closing the gap on a 1.5°C Global Average Temperature rise limit while the World Meteorological Organization has concluded that there is a 50% chance that the 1.5°C limit will be reached within 5 years. • How both the COP and Intersessional UN Conferences have failed to put the world on a path of decreasing global annual GHG emissions. • How loss and damage is being considered more and more often at these climate conferences. • How countries are not meeting their agreements to collectively provide $100 Billion to fund mitigation and adaptation in the developing nations. • The observation of the lack of a sense of urgency at UN climate negotiations and the point that this won't stop our group from attending and doing our bit to let people know what's happening and how quickly it's happening. • The observation of the enormous mismatch between, our human politics to address the problem of climate change and how quickly the changes are taking place. • and more. . . • Links: • United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (wikipedia) • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_... • A Brief Analysis of the Bonn Climate Change Conference • https://enb.iisd.org/bonn-climate-cha... • The evidence is clear: the time for action is now.
