Although it can feel like there are infinitely many kinds of categorical syllogisms, in fact there are only 256, and of those, only 40 are valid. So how can we confirm which ones are valid and which ones are invalid, especially if we're not already familiar with the terms of the argument? One method is to try to show that the syllogism is INVALID by a counterexample. The beautiful thing about a counterexample is that you need only one. A single counterexample—that is, a syllogism of the same form that takes true premises to a false conclusion—is enough to demonstrate that a given form is ALWAYS invalid. Unfortunately, it's not a great method to demonstrate the VALIDITY of a given form. For that, we'll need something else. • Subscribe: http://bit.ly/SubTimRicchuiti | Enable ALL push notifications 🔔 • Follow Tim Ricchuiti: • Instagram:   / ricchuiti   • Twitter:   / timricchuiti   • Watch more videos: • Math Minutes:    • Math Minutes   • Number Sense:    • Number Sense (UIL / PSIA)   • Glencoe Texas Algebra I Lessons:    • Glencoe Texas Algebra 1 Lessons
