The Hughes 500 is my dream helicopter. So I was thrilled when Jack and Elaine O’Neil invited me to fly their 1969 Hughes 500c, whose former life was as a military OH-6 in Vietnam. In this video, Jack takes us through the startup sequence for his Hughes 500. We then depart Big Bear airport to see what it’s like to fly a Hughes 500 through a mountain environment. Along the way I try my hand at the controls, we fly low fast, and the 500c’s turbine experiences a slight compressor stall.
