In my humble opinion, what sets African music apart from western music is the ability to utilize simple harmony, married with interesting (often repetitive and persistent) rhythms to come up with the most beautiful music you will ever hear. • Oliver Mtukudzi was master at doing this. His amazing ability to utilize simple chord progressions… often same ones in a lot of different songs, but approached from completely different directions, while creating very diverse melodies, never seizes to amaze me. I took two of my favorite tunes of his in the same general 1 - 4 - 1/5 - 5 progression to try and demonstrate this. • ‘‘Bvongodza Muto’ and ‘What’s Going On’ are two of my many favorite songs by Oliver Mtukudzi. I am not alone in that… THE Bonnie Raitt was so impressed by ‘What’s Going On’ so much that she had to record her own version of it.
