Wine-Searcher's Wine Director, David Allen, Master of Wine, tastes Penfold’s popular Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon blend from the 2019 vintage. • Penfolds was founded in 1844 when Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold arrived in Australia from England. He purchased 500 acres (200 hectares) of land in what is now the Adelaide suburb of Magill. Penfolds grew to become one of the leading names in the Australian wine industry in the 20th century. • The Koonunga Hill brand takes its name from a vineyard in the Barossa Valley - it was first produced in 1976. Today this wine is a multi-regional bled comprising fruit sourced from throughout South Australia. This wine aged for 14 months in seasoned French and American oak hogsheads. • Penfolds has had a complex history in recent decades with various mergers and acquisitions.
