It developed after the 15th century when Albanians fled the Ottoman conquest and settled in southern Italy, particularly in regions like Calabria, Sicily, Basilicata, and Apulia. Arbëresh retains many archaic features of medieval Albanian, distinct from modern Albanian dialects, and has been influenced by Italian over centuries. Despite these influences, it preserves traditional Albanian phonetics, grammar, and vocabulary, alongside elements of Byzantine and Catholic traditions. Arbëresh is recognized as a minority language in Italy, and while some communities still speak it, it is endangered due to assimilation and the dominance of Italian. Efforts are being made to preserve it through cultural programs, education, and linguistic documentation.
