Checking the Oil in a Robinson R44 Raven II Helicopter

Here's a quick video extra showing how to check the oil in a Robinson R44 Raven II helicopter. • I check the oil at preflight but while I was based at my off-airport landing zone, the ground was not level and I never got a good reading. So when I flew to the airport for fuel, I'd check again on level ground and add oil if necessary. • The helicopter burns about a quart every 5 hours or so of flight time. As most Robinson owners will tell you, if you fill it up to the 9 quart mark, it'll just blow out all that extra oil so you're basically throwing oil (and money) away. My old helicopter liked to be at 7 quarts and this one seems to like it, too. • I use Aeroshell W100Plus, which is a good oil for hot climates. I do most of my flying during the summer and it does get hot here. I buy it locally by the case. • The oil is recommended to be changed every 25 hours and must be changed, along with the filter, every 50 hours or four months, whichever comes first. This is a Lycoming requirement. The engine is a Lycoming IO-540. Although I could change the oil, I don't -- I pay a mechanic to do it. (Then he has to deal with getting rid of the old oil.) • The oil dipstick cap gets very hot when the engine is running, so I keep shop rags under the front passenger seat with the extra oil to grip the cap when it's hot. I don't make it super tight because loosening a very tight cap caused me to suffer some permanent nerve damage in my left index finger that puts me in excruciating pain when I try to loosen a very tight cap again. It doesn't have to be super tight. It just has to be tight enough that it won't leak. • I hope that answers most questions! • About Me and the Helicopter • I have been flying for about 20 years. My nearly 4,000 hours of flight time is in Robinson R44, Robinson R22, and Bell 206L (Long Ranger) helicopters. • The helicopter is a 2005 Robinson R44 Raven II -- the same one that appears in the photo at the beginning of the video. You can learn more about them here: https://robinsonheli.com/r44-specific... I own this helicopter. It is the third helicopter I've owned since 2000. • My helicopter has ADS-B Out and is picked up by radar facilities. You can see my track for recent flights on Flightradar24: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/ai... This is a great site for tracking any almost any flight, including the airlines. • About the Video • The video was recorded with an iPhone Xs using the built-in microphone. • The video was edited on a Macintosh using Screenflow software. Learn more about it here: https://www.telestream.net/screenflow... • The intro music is by Bob Levitus, famed Dr. Mac. You can find him here: http://www.boblevitus.com/ • I try to drop cockpit POV videos every Sunday morning and extras with more info about owning and operating a helicopter midweek. I also host occasional livestreams with Q A chats. Subscribe so you don't miss anything new! And tell your friends. The more subscribers I have, the more motivated I am to keep producing videos like this one. • Any Amazon links on my channel are affiliate links. If you click one of them and buy something, Amazon sends me a few pennies. Enough pennies make a dollar. Enough dollars buy new equipment. It doesn't cost you anything so I hope you'll shop with one of those links. Thanks. • Still reading? Thanks! Maybe you'll consider buying something from my Etsy store to help support this channel?
