Ivan Mestrovic was born in 1883 in Vrpolje, Croatia and died in 1962, in South Bend, USA. • He was the most prominent Croatian sculptor in XX. Century. In addition to his artistic activity in the field of sculpture, he left his creative mark also in the field of architecture, drawing, painting, graphics and literature. He was also well known for his political and educational activities. • Ivan Mestrovic as a boy artist, at sixteen, arranged his first exhibition in 1899 in Otavice, a village in the Dalmatian hinterland / Dalmatinska zagora, where he spent his childhood. Although in Otavice he didn’t have the opportunity to see great works of art nor attend school, his innate talent resulted in a series of sculptures made in soft stone and wood during the idleness and monotony while he was taking care of the sheep. • In 1901 he enrolled at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, where very soon he began a brilliant artistic career as a member of the Secession. There follow a number of years of work and exhibitions in many cultural centers throughout Europe, such as Rome, Paris, London, Cannes and Geneva. • His most creative period between the two world wars were spent in Croatia creating a number of sculptural and architectural masterpieces, such as the Mestrovic Crikvine-Kaštilac and Mestrovic Gallery in Split - former summer residence of the Mestrovic family, also the Atelier in Zagreb – his former house, and, finally, The Holy Redeemer Church - Mestrovic family mausoleum in Otavice. • These buildings, along with other numerous artworks, he generously donated to the Croatian people, in 1952, so nowadays they are assembled together as the Museums of Ivan Mestrovic. • In 1911 at the International Art Exhibition in Rome Ivan Mestrovic was awarded first prize for sculpture. In 1915, the Victoria Albert Museum in London organized a solo exhibition. It was a great honor as before him only one living artist had such an exhibition - August Rodin, in 1914. • Ivan Mestrovic was also the first living artist to have an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, in 1947. • In the last years of his life Mestrovic was a professor of sculpture at American Universities Syracuse, New York, and Notre Dame, Indiana.
