Micardis is used to treat essential high blood pressure. ‘Essential’ means that the high blood pressure is not caused by any other condition. Micardis is also used to reduce cardiovascular events such as heart attack in patients who are at risk. • Micardis tablets contain the active ingredient telmisartan. Telmisartan works by blocking the action of a hormone in the body which is involved in narrowing of blood vessels. This causes blood vessels to widen, allowing more space and less resistance in them. • Terlmisartan also reduces the production of a hormone that causes salt and water to be retained by the kidneys. This decreases the amount of fluid in the blood vessels, which also lessens the resistance and pressure in the blood vessels. • Micardis Plus tablets are also available, which have added hydrochlorothiazide. Hydrochlorothiazide is a type of diuretic called a thiazide diuretic.
