Kriben Govender (Honours Degree in Food Science Technology) has a chat with the co-founder of Entomo Farms, Dr Jarrod Goldin on the gut health and sustainability benefits of edible insects like crickets. • Bio: • Formerly from South Africa, Dr. Goldin has been a Chiropractor and Chiropractic educator for 20 years. • He’s witnessed the impact that food can have on our health. He says we now have to “Consider more than just the health benefits of what we eat; we also have to consider the ecological footprint of our food choices.” • In 2014 Dr Goldin joined his brothers Darren and Ryan, who have 12 years experience farming insects with their business Reptile Feeders, to start Entomo Farms, North America’s first and largest insect farm, dedicated to raising insects, specifically for human consumption. • In January 2015, Entomo Farms worked out of facilities that were 5000 square feet. They now have 20,000 square feet of work and development space as they continue to lead the field of “Bugtrepreneurs”. • Entomo Farms has been covered in the media such as Toronto Life, LaPress+, The Globe and Mail, Washington Post, and more. • Topics discussed: • Start 00:00 • Jarrods interest in edible interests 02:40 • The origin story of Entomo Farms 03:08 • Cricket Protein for pets 04:40 • The history of eating insects 05:55 • Getting over the “yuck factor 07:10 • Choosing sustainable protein 08:44 • Prebiotic Fibre in Cricket Flour 12:40 • Micronutrients in Cricket Flour 13:10 • What is Chitin? 14:12 • The impact of Chitin on Bifidobacteria 14:32 • Fibre and the Gut Microbiome 15:10 • What do crickets eat? 20:10 • “You are what you eat ate 22:00 • How to start eating crickets? 24:40 • Cooking with cricket flour 25:38 • Crickets, Vitamin B12 and iron 26:10 • Crickets and Vegetarianism 27:50 • Ethical harvesting of crickets 28:56 • Cricket flour and FODMAPs 30:20 • Lighting environment 31:27 • Varieties of edible insects 33:52 • Mealworms 34:30 • Caring for your planet 35:40 • Incidental Insect consumption 38:47 • Eating more bugs for Gut Health 40:38 • • Impact of Edible Cricket Consumption on Gut Microbiota in Healthy Adults, a Double-blind, Randomized Crossover Trial. • https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3... • • Brought to you by: • • Nourishme Organics proud partner of Entomo Farms • • Learn more about Cricket Protein Here • • https://www.nourishmeorganics.com.au/... • 10% off using code: podcast • • Allele Gut Microbiome Testing • • 10% off Gut Explorer Pro using code: gutlove • • https://www.allele.com.au/collections... • • • Connect with Dr Jarrod Goldin • • Website- https://entomofarms.com/ • • Connect with Kriben Govender: • • Facebook- / kribengee • Instagram- / kribengovender • Youtube- https://www.youtube.com/c/Nourishmeor... • Gut Health Gurus Facebook Group: / nourishmeorganics • If you enjoyed this episode and would like to show your support: • • 1) Please subscribe on Itunes and leave a positive review • • • Instructions: • • Click this link • https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/g... • • Click View in Itunes button on the left-hand side • This will open the Itunes app • Click the Subscribe button • Click on Ratings and Reviews tab • Click on Write a Review button • • Non-Itunes users can leave a Google Review here: • http://bit.ly/nourishmeorganics • • • 2) Subscribe, like and leave a positive comment on Youtube • • https://www.youtube.com/c/Nourishmeor... • • 3) Share your favourite episode on Facebook, Instagram, and Stories • 4) Let your friends and family know about this Podcast by email, text, messenger etc • • 5) Support us on Patreon for as little as $5 per month and get same day, early access to our latest podcasts (typically around 4 to 6 weeks earlier than the general public) • / nourishmeorganics • • • Thank you so much for your support.
