(4 Sep 1997) English/Nat • Princess Diana's close friend, Elton John, will sing at her funeral on Saturday. • British officials announced Thursday he'll perform Candle in the Wind , a song he wrote about Marilyn Monroe, but officials say he'll change some of the lyrics for Diana. • As the final preparations for Princess Diana's funeral are being made by Buckingham Palace, it was announced that her long-time close friend, Elton John, will sing at the service. • Elton John will put new lyrics to his song Candle in the Wind and perform the special version at Princess Diana's funeral to be held at Westminster Abbey. • Earlier in the week, newspapers in Britain had reported some disagreement between Buckingham Palace and Diana's family over whether John would have a role in Saturday's ceremony. • The princess and the singer were friends, and she was photographed wrapping a comforting arm around him as he wept at a memorial service for fashion designer Gianni Versace in Milan on July 22. • The announcement that he would sing at Diana's funeral was welcomed by the British public. • SOUNDBITE: (English) • I think it's very lovely because if you remember when it was Versace's funeral she was the one consoling him. I think it's very lovely that he's been given this chance to sing for her because she's a very sweet person and we all do miss her deeply. • SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop • SOUNDBITE: (English) • I think that's a very good idea. I think people are entitled to express their feelings at a time like this and it's a wonderful idea if it's not traditional. She wasn't a traditional person and he was someone who loved her greatly and she liked him. That's fine by me. • SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop • Candle in the Wind, released in 1973, originally invoked Marilyn Monroe in its opening line - Goodbye Norma Jean, a reference to the star's real name - Norma Jean Baker. • But the new words will be a unique dedication to Diana, starting Goodbye, England's Rose; may you ever grow in our hearts. You were the grace that placed itself where lives were torn apart. • These are the lyrics to the new song: • Goodbye England's rose; may you ever grow in our hearts. • You were the grace that placed itself where lives were torn apart. • You called out to our country, and you whispered to those in pain. • Now you belong to heaven, and the stars spell out your name. • And it seems to me you lived your life like a candle in the wind: • never fading with the sunset when the rain set in. • And your footsteps will always fall here, along England's greenest hills; • your candle's burned out long before your legend ever will. • Loveliness we've lost; these empty days without your smile. • This torch we'll always carry for our nation's golden child. • And even though we try, the truth brings us to tears; • all our words cannot express the joy you brought us through the years. • Goodbye England's rose, from a country lost without your soul, • who'll miss the wings of your compassion more than you'll ever know. • • Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork • Twitter: / ap_archive • Facebook: / aparchives • Instagram: / apnews • • • You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
