Well, when there are 2 entire days in-between chasing the Great Race from Ogden, what is there to do in the middle of Wyoming? After nearly 2 weeks straight of UP, we set our sights North to the Powder River Basin. This triple to quadruple tracked area, between Gillette, and Casper WY, hosts several surface coal mines, including the largest surface coal mine in the world. Coal trains constantly move in-and-out of the region during all hours of the day. There were already a few coal trains sitting in storage along the mainline, and with the coal market on the decline as more companies switch to natural gas, the Powder River Basin loses more traffic each day. We took the opportunity and spent 2 days in the area, covering the entire line as best we could, despite the lacking number of coal trains. • (00:30) DPU meet of BNSF C-NAMNMA-086, and BNSF E-SCNNAM-048 • (01:30) BNSF C-NAMPEK-066 • (03:05) BNSF E-SKSBTM-020A • (04:35) UP C-TUNA02-10 and UP C-NROM01-14 • (07:15) BNSF E-SLPBTM-075A • (08:30) BNSF E-MOLBTM-025A • (09:45) UP C-CANCO1-14 and UP CWCBT01-13 racing up the grade • (10:40) UP C-CANCO1-14 and BNSF Manifest • (13:15) BNSF E-PCTATM-021 • (14:35) UP C-WCBT01-13 and BNSF L-AJSWH6-10 • (18:10) BNSF E-RRSNAM-011B and BNSF C-NAMHOH-005A • (21:00) BNSF C-NAMNMA-088A and BNSF E-MICBTM-030A • (23:45) BNSF E-PCTATM-815A • (25:20) BNSF C-BAMMIC-059 and UP C-NATU9-14, meeting UP CIMNA02-12 • (32:05) BNSF E-NMANAM-087 and UP C-NRIMO3 • Check me out on Flickr!
