The Israeli government upholds a longstanding commitment and directive not to engage in any intelligence operations in the US, the statement said, adding, This directive is strictly enforced without exception. • Speaking to i24NEWS, former Mossad chief Danny Yatom dismissed the report as fake news , while story's author said he stood by it. • Notably, in contrast to other espionage discoveries, there were no consequences for this case, as the Trump administration did not reprove the Israeli government, according to one of the former officials. • The stingrays, technically referred to as IMSI-catchers, work by acting as regular cell towers that are then able to obtain the locations and identities of mobile devices in addition to data and call content. • According to Politico, the incumbent president has been notoriously careless in security protocols, such as failing to use a secured cell phone, while also citing his demurred response over a New York Times report in October 2018 of Chinese spies tapping his calls, which he said was “so incorrect I do not have time here to correct it.” • At that point, officials at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had already uncovered evidence of the stingrays around the nation’s capital while conducting tests, though it was unable to peg their specific source. • The findings were apparently relayed to relevant federal agencies, Politico reported, based on a letter by a top DHS official, Christopher Krebs, to Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon in May of 2018. • Israel's Foreign Minister Israel Katz released a statement to the press, fully denying the espionage report. Israel is not engaged in any spying operations in the United States, Katz said. Former head of the IDF Military Intelligence Directorate Amos Yadlin reiterated Israeli officials remarks, calling Politico's report fake news with a flavor of antisemitism.
