You just make a watery mixture of joint compound, then apply it to the wall like paint. You are trying to get even coverage of little bits of joint compound, but sometimes, you will get large blobs. When you knock down the texture, the large blobs turn into big smooth areas, which doesn't look right. • THE TRICK: run the roller over the wall AFTER you knock it down. This will put a shallow texture into the smooth blobs.
