In its heyday, Rome relied on slave labor for almost all aspects of life-from work in the fields, to the construction of grand buildings, to domestic duties in luxurious villas. Slaves could come from anywhere: prisoners of war, sold children, or people who had fallen into poverty. They were treated as property, without rights, without freedom. However, amidst the violence and oppression, some slaves dared to fight back, like Spartacus who led a great rebellion against the Romans. Although they ultimately failed, their courage inspired many people and became a symbol of resistance. The story of slavery in Rome is a dark reminder that behind the glory of an empire, there are millions of lives that suffer.
