The chi-squared test (χ2) is a statistical test to identify if there is or isn't a connection between two categorical variables. In Ecology we lay this out using two hypotheses: • Null hypothesis (H0): Species X and Y distribution is unrelated. • Alternative hypothesis (HA): Species X and Y distribution is linked (either positively or negatively). • Quadrat sampling provides data for this test.
