The lyrics were written by Tsezar Solodar. The song commemorates the battle achievements of the Cossacks, a number of whom fought on the Soviet Allied side. Reportedly, Cossacks performing drills with their horses were one of the first sights that Allied British and American troops saw when crossing the Elbe to meet their Soviet counterparts at the end of the war.
