Usually, the advice is to use mixed granulate. • In this video, we install 60 x 60 x 4 centimetre tiles. We recommend renting a tile donkey to move the tiles. You can hire such a tile donkey from the better DIY shop. • --- • 00:00 Introduction • 00:46 Step 1 - Prepare the ground • If you have old paving lying around, remove it. Is this not the case? Then you need to dig it out. In this case, 15 to 20 centimetres is enough, as we are then up against the clay soil. You can then lay the sand bed on top of this. • 2:16 Using mixed granulate • As a rule, this is only used for driveways, soft peaty soil that often settles and for newly constructed shoring. You should then apply 10-15 cm of sand on top of a 30-40 cm mixed granulate bed. • 03:20 Step 2 - Work the sand bed • Smooth out your sand bed with a simple board or rake. Also think about where you would like lighting or power points in your garden. Lay the ground cable for these now, as this cannot be done once the paving has been laid. Once this has been done, you can compact your sand bed with a vibrating plate. Work in straight lines and use safety shoes with a steel toecap and ear defenders. • 04:23 Step 3 - Determine the height of the paving • Make sure you get an inch below your wooden sill. This way you extend the life of the sill and it is not constantly under moisture. It is also important to keep one centimetre per running metre as a slope for rainwater. To make sure it runs straight, you can use a long spirit level or a construction laser. • 06:10 Step 4 - Descending with the spirit level • We recommend using a spirit level of 1.20 metres instead of 1.80 metres. The reason for this is to keep control over the work you are doing. A smaller spirit level also allows you to fix small mistakes better. It's still a specialist job though, so if you don't feel up to it, call in a paver just to be sure. While you are paving, pull the sand towards you. You will see that a hump forms. The idea is to pave off that plane so that you don't create unnecessary holes in your plane. • 09:40 Step 5 - Create angled lines • If you want to create clean lines in your garden with your tiles, use a right angle. You can also use the Pythagorean theorem here. • 12:14 Step 6 - Picking up the tiles • You can easily pick up the tiles with a tile donkey, so you don't have to lift heavy stones yourself. You can also use a rubber mat or doormat to drop your tiles on. Lifting is also possible, of course, but dropping them on a rubber mat is a handy tip from us. • 14:33 Step 7 - Laying tiles • Pay close attention to the first tile you lay, so you can easily lay the rest of the tiles straight. If tiles don't fit, you can grind them to size with special machines. It is important to rinse your tile with water immediately after grinding so that you don't get any weird spots on your paving. If you still need to move the tiles in mm, you can do this with a shovel or a rubber mallet. • 20:36 Step 8 - Grinding around the pergola posts • Important here is to measure from the kind of spacers of the tile to your post and then go back a centimetre. This way, your post will have enough room to work. The part you cut out of your tile can be backfilled with a block later if necessary. • • 22:28 Step 9 - Use of curb stones • For a patio, we recommend using 5- or 6-centimetre curb stones, so you can use 5x15 or 6x16. In this video we have used 6x20 cm. Tap your curb stones after laying them down to make sure they are secure. • 26:49 Step 10- Cleaning and final result • When finished, clean your paving with water and a broom and enjoy your landscaped terrace.
